Virginia is horse country. The Virginia equine industry purchases over one billion dollars in goods and services from Virginia businesses and individuals. According to an Economic Impact Study of the Virginia horse industry:

There are approximately 225,000 horses in Virginia.
Virginians spend $2,800 per horse per year for maintenance, or $680.5 million in direct expenditures to support horses.
Virginians spend an estimated $126.8 million annually for the purchase or lease of horses.
Virginia uses 4.7 million acres of land for their horses; this land has an assessed value of $5.9 billion.
