The
Thoroughbred Celebration Fall Horse Show Featuring Off the
Track Thoroughbreds (OTTB's) Proved Once Again That "If you
build it they will come"
This unique venue
gives former race horses an opportunity to compete in a two
day hunter/jumper show. These marvelous equine athletes have
gone from the starting gate to the in gate, proving to
exhibitors and spectators alike that ex-racehorses are incredibly
versatile, talented and retrainable.
One hundred
OTTBs converged on the Virginia Horse Center for a
great weekend of competition. Riders could choose from 25
classes consisting of many levels of competition. Depending on
their placings in the over fences classes, some horses qualified
to compete in Sunday's $1,000 Hunter and $1,000 Jumper Stakes
classes. For many of the thoroughbreds, this was their first
show; others were seasoned competitors wrapping up their
2009 horse show calendar.
There
were many memorable highlights of the show. One More For The
Road, a former stake horse who raced as P Day and earned
more than $680,000 during his career, was Reserve Champion in the
Belmont Jumper Division. After his days of racing, P Day was
abandoned in a field and headed for the kill pen, before being
rescued by New Vocations of Ohio. His current owner Chrissy Resch
adopted him and successfully shows him as a jumper. Silent
Thunder, ridden by his owner Amy Steinmann raced 86 times
before beginning his career as a hunter.
Exhibitor
Krista Hodgkin won the $1,000 Hunter Stake aboard her
mare Well Spent (who raced as All Game).

The show's
chairperson Anne Russek said the purpose of these shows is to
"...provide a venue which offers the racing industry an
opportunity to provide sponsorship and support to those equestrians
who realize the extended value that these thoroughbreds have when
they are finished racing."
The
Thoroughbred Celebration will offer three shows in
2010, a "triple crown" if you will, March 20-21,
June 12-13, and November 20-21. All three shows will take
place at the Virginia Horse
Center.

Virginian to Teach
Jan
Snodgrass a Marshall based trainer and TTEAM/TTouch Practitioner
2 will present demonstrations and a lecture at the Horse World
Expo in Timonium, MD January 21-24. The demonstrations include:
"Softening your Horse's Resistance," "Overcoming
Your Horse's Fear" and lecture, "Ten Steps to a Calmer
Horse."
Jan
Snodgrass has a 35-year background riding, training and competing
horses. She has competed through advanced level 3-day eventing
and third level dressage. For the past 20 years Jan has used the
training methods developed by Linda Tellington-Jones to train,
retrain, rehabilitate and restore horse's bodies and
minds. Just as her mentor, Linda Tellington-Jones, Jan
recognizes horses as intelligent beings and as individuals with
an inherent willingness to please people but for the obstacles
placed in their way. Jan strives to teach people how to eliminate
these common obstacles and how to develop a strong bond with
their horses with a deeper level of awareness. For more
information on Jan, go to her web site: www.theexcellenthorse.com. For more
information on the expo go to: www.horseworldexpo.com.

Free Horses: All-Breed
Adoption Service Launched
on TheHorse.com
TheHorse.com has opened a no-cost listing service for any
breed of horse that is free to a good home. Horses of any age,
breed, or sex are eligible to be placed on the new database of
free horses.
"In
these tough economic times there are good horses that need to
find other homes and careers," said Kimberly S. Brown,
Publisher/Editor of The Horse brand. "This database allows
owners, breeders, and trainers to place a description of a horse
in front of horse industry participants with the objective of
finding a good home for that horse.
"I
would encourage those placing horses on this listing service to
include a link to photos or videos of the horses," continued
Brown. Any transactions will be the responsibility of the owner
of the horse, who will be contacted directly by interested horse
owners.
If you have
a horse in need of a new home, please visit www.TheHorse.com. Links to the database are
on the home page, or you can visit TheHorse.com/Horses/Add.aspx to add a horse
or TheHorse.com/Horses/Available.aspx to view
horses of all breeds seeking new homes.
We recommend anyone giving away a horse, whether to
a private individual or a welfare/rescue organization, learn as
much as possible about that person or group prior to giving the
horse away. There have been unscrupulous individuals and groups
who take horses under the pretense of giving them good homes,
then sell them for slaughter. (See article "Rescue
Highlights Danger of Free Horses.")
The article "Horse Rescue Organizations:
Questions to Ask" offers some tips on making sure the person
or group who takes your horse will, indeed, have good intentions.
There also
are some very good organizations that are recognized throughout
the horse industry as being legitimate places to donate your
horses, especially the sound horses looking for other careers.
For example, the article "Options for Ex-Racehorses"
will give you the names and contact information for some of these
groups whether you are interested in donating or adopting a
Thoroughbred. The Unwanted Horse Coalition also maintains a list
of rescue and welfare organizations.

Cats Need
Homes
Wilderness Cat Rescue has feral cats that are fully vetted
and healthy. We want to relocate them to a rural home where they can
be sheltered in a barn or out building. These are not pets and
cannot be petted or handled. They are afraid of people and will
bolt when approached. We arrange to relocate the cats within a
reasonable drive of the greater Fredericksburg, VA area. We prefer
that 2-3 cats be relocated together. 540-207-1589.
