Attention College Students: Virginia
Tech to Develop New Equine Education Program in Middleburg,
VA
The Virginia
Tech College of Agriculture and Life Sciences has announced plans
to create a new equine education program at the Middleburg
Agricultural Research and Extension Center (MARE Center).
An undergraduate student learning experience in equine sciences
will serve as the cornerstone for the teaching program at the
center. In addition, Virginia Tech will relocate its world-class
group of sport horse mares from Blacksburg to Middleburg, adding
to the band of horses in residence at the center.
The semester-long experience will immerse
students in an environment filled with horses.
Along with the normal curriculum, students will be expected
to participate in the daily operations of a large-scale equine
breeding, show, and sales facility. Additionally, students will
be able to participate in in-depth summer internship programs as
well as a study abroad course.
"The difference between this program and
the program offered in Blacksburg will be the amount of
experiential learning that will be demanded of those enrolled in
the program. This is a working operation, where horses require
attention 24/7," explained Gerrard, head of the Department
of Animal and Poultry Sciences
Rebecca Splan, associate professor of animal
and poultry sciences, will relocate to Middleburg to join Shea
Porr, superintendent of the center, to develop and teach the
curriculum. Faculty members at the Equine Medical Center in
Leesburg, Va., have also expressed an interest in collaborating
in the program.
"Clearly, we have a rather large student
body interested in an education centered on the horse, and we
intend to do our utmost to ensure its viability and growth into
the foreseeable future," said Gerrard.

USHJA
Announces 2009 Lifetime Achievement Honorees
On December 8th, Larry Langer and Joe Fargis
of Virginia will be honored with the USHJA Lifetime Achievement
Award at the 2009 Evening of Equestrians Dinner during the USHJA
Annual Meeting in St. Petersburg, FL. This award was created to
recognize members whose involvement in the sport, as well as in
the USHJA, has benefited the industry.
USHJA President Bill Moroney shared his
excitement about the 2009 honorees. "Deciding the recipient
of this award is never easy. Our industry is incredibly fortunate
to have an abundance of people that have dedicated their lives to
this sport, which makes a decision like this even harder.
However, people like Joe Fargis and Larry Langer, who, in their
own way, have been synonymous with dedication and achievement in
our sport, are why we created this award."

Western Riders and Horses Rejoice
The Agricultural Marketing group at New Mexico State
University in Las Cruces, New Mexico, has undertaken the first
scientific saddle fit study of Western Performance Saddles. Using
a force sensor array (FSA) pressure pad, which shows exactly how
the saddle applies contact to the horse, different levels of
pressure are shown in different colors and in three
dimensions.
The focus of the study is on barrel and roping
saddles, but the results are applicable to all types of western
saddle users.
Using this latest innovation in saddle fit
diagnosis, the computer pressure pad, the students are examining
all aspects of saddle fit, including how both movement and
padding effect saddle fit.
Several hundred horse and rider combinations
are being scanned and catalogued. The results will be
tabulated and released sometime later this fall and promise to
provide new insights into horse and rider comfort and health, as
well as challenge some traditional ideas on ways to improve
saddle fit.
For information or to access to the results,

Ending
Thought
On the topic of horse training, former USET Three
Day coach Jack leGoff said: "I can teach a horse to jump off
a 12-foot drop into 30 feet of water. . . (pause) one time."
"Implicit in this quote is the question - But is that the
point? Everything we do has ramifications, some of them not
immediately evident even if you're looking for them. Long term
effects, whether they be effects on our horses, on our society,
or on our environment, are the epitaph that we write for
ourselves. Beyond 'in the least to have done no harm,' we can
hope to influence the nature of humane discourse not only with
horses but, by example, among ourselves." Dressage

Cats Need
Homes
Wilderness Cat Rescue has feral cats that are fully vetted and
healthy. We want to relocate them to a rural home where they can
be sheltered in a barn or out building. These are not pets and
cannot be petted or handled. They are afraid of people and will bolt
when approached. We arrange to relocate the cats within a
reasonable drive of the greater Fredericksburg, VA area. We
prefer that 2-3 cats be relocated together.540-207-1589.
